What is happening in Gym?

By Holly S.

In gym class we will be participating in the jump roping contest. It is when everyone lines up and goes under the rope when it swings. Then the class with the most jumps gets to help out with field day and gets a big pizza party. Then there is the single jump rope contest. That is when you just do regular jump roping. The record for the single jumps is 1,000 jumps by 215’s own Sarah Cameron. It is optional. There is also something called Student of the Month. That is the student with the most athletic ability and the person with the most sportsmanship gets a free option day and a diploma with a free lunch pass. yea! Don't you want to win student of the month? Well only 5th grade gets to win. Lastly Ms. Marcus's class broke the class record with 2748 jumps! bye!

What is happening in Math?

by Ashley C.
In math class we are learning a lot about fractions. Everybody in math class can reduce fractions easily. We can also find equivalent fractions. Math in Mrs.Fitzpatrick’s class is a lot of fun. We are always doing fun math activities. I thought fractions were going to be hard but they were not hard at all.
EXAMPLE
½ =5/10

these are Equivalent Fractions

Fun with Fractions!

Player of the Week

By:Sean D.

This week's player of the week is Rajon Rondo.
Recently, Rondo suffered an injury in his eye. During pre-game warm ups, Rondo wears sunglasses. But during games, he is forced to take them off for the sake of other players (or else they wouldn’t be able to see his eyes therefore not knowing where he’s going.) Rondo has also gotten a ton of assists in the last couple of games. He’s been doing very well especially since he’s been injured. Against the Los Angeles Lakers, Rondo got assist after assist. Layup after layup. He even got 20 assists a couple of times! Make sure to watch at least a few of the Celts’ games. Maybe you’ll see a part of history!

What's happening in the LTC?

by Daniel D.

The library and technology center is filled with fun things. There are ipods to go on Destiny Quest, our awesome teachers Mrs. D'Elia and Mr. Callahan, but most of all, the books. Books are a good source of learning but you can also have a good time reading them. Speaking of books, lets focus on the library. There are tons of books in the library that I think everyone will enjoy. For example, there are sports books, mysteries, survival, and even information books. Also, Mrs. D'Elia is having openings for Page Patrol. Page Patrol is something where you help out in the library by working once a week at recess. You first have to ask Mrs. D'Elia for a Page Patrol application slip if you are interested, then fill it out. It's as simple as that! On your first day you will be trained for certain things like putting books back on shelves in the right spot. After you have finished your training, you will be an expert. Now, the books. The library has lots of exciting books like the ones I just mentioned. Also, there are some new books that will be available to you probably by the end of next week or sooner. These books include the Fablehaven series and the Ranger's Apprentice series. The new books also consist of authors such as Anthony Horowitiz, and P. Bosch. Destiny Quest is a relatively new feature to the internet. It's where you can make friends, look at books, and chat about books. You can also find the top ten books on Destiny Quest but there also here too.

1. Cabin Fever

2. Cat in the Hat

3. Cat in the Hat Comes Back

4. Mr. Popper's Penguins

5. Poodles

6. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

7. I am Going

8. I Can Read With my Eyes Shut

9. Ipad 2 (computer, not book)

10. Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Lightning Thief

I hope the next time you come to the library you pick up a book you will remember for the rest of your life.

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a wonderful summer!

Hello! I'm Mrs Fitzpatrick, one your fifth grade teachers. I am looking forward to meeting you and hearing about the interesting and fun things you were able to do over vacation. I had a great summer with my family. We spent a lot of time in Maine and we even traveled to Cancun, Mexico. Yes, that is a monkey on my shoulder, his name was Toto!

I have also been busy getting our classroom ready. I have many exciting plans for the year and I am eager for it to begin. I hope to make fifth grade an exciting and memorable year for you. I want to make our classroom a creative place, filled with learning activities, challenging projects, great achievement and lasting friendships. If we work together we can make this a special year.

Here is a short list of supplies to start the year off.

  • 1 pencil case
  • pencils and erasers
  • 1 book cover (jumbo size)
  • 2 containers of disinfecting wipes - we go through a lot of these!
  • 2 boxes of tissues
  • 1 or 2 chapter books of your choice for independent reading
  • a water bottle marked with your name on it - essential for hot days

*wipes and tissues can be sent in at any time.

Finally, the most important thing for you to bring to our class on the first day is a smile! I am looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday, September 7th.

Mrs. Fitzpatrick

Massachusetts Children's Book Award

Dear Families,

We are very excited that this year the fifth grade will once again participate in the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award program (MCBA).

This program is organized by Salem State College. Participating students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades across Massachusetts are given a "master list" of book titles. After reading five of the books, students may vote for their favorite. The votes are tallied and the winning book is awarded the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award.

The 25 nominated books span a 3-plus year range of readability, ensuring that almost all of our students will find a selection within their independent reading level and challenges are available to our fluent readers as well. Voting will take place in March allowing plenty of time for students to read and enjoy the selections.

We have enclosed a listing of the 25 nominees for 2011-12. Many of these titles are available through the Burlington Public Library. Books will also be available in the Pine Glen Library and in the fifth grade classrooms.

Students should challenge themselves to read as many books they can. A minimum of five books is required for voting. We hope that you will support your child in this reading adventure. Consider reading the books together and discussing them as your child chooses a favorite.

This is an exciting program and we are looking forward to our classroom results!

Thank you in advance.

The fifth grade team

PS: If you choose to invest in any of the MCBA titles and would be willing to loan or donate your book to the classroom after your child has read it, we would be extremely grateful.
